MEDICO Board of Directors 2014

The MEDICO Board of Directors is the organization’s main governing body. The Board is comprised of an Executive Committee; President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, along with general board members, each bringing skills and expertise that help further the vision and goals of MEDICO’s mission. The Board meets twice a year. Board terms are three years.


Bob Gurmankin, DMD, (President) began his work with MEDICO in 2004 as a dentist and has been joined on subsequent trips by his wife Missy and son, Dan. Bob has a BA in Biology from Lafayette College and his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania. He has a private practice in Philadelphia. His interests with MEDICO are in the areas of education and environmental issues.

Julie Walraven (Vice President) joined MEDICO in September of 2004 as a RN and massage therapist. Her interest with MEDICO grew after participating on a number of teams. Her passions within MEDICO are sustainability and health education. Julie lives in California with her husband Bill and their son, Seth. She is a graduate of Nazareth College and The Virginia School of Massage.

Larry Pittman (Secretary) has participated in MEDICO trips since 2010. A graduate of Florida State University, he has degree in Accounting and has worked in the accounting field for 17 years. He is currently the CFO at The Pine School in Hobe Sound, Florida. Larry is a Gulf War Veteran and volunteers regularly assisting veterans and their families. He and his wife Eileen, an elementary school teacher, have two daughters. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys hunting, fishing, paddle boarding, camping, and traveling.

Sheldon Kupper, DDS, (Treasurer) has provided service to MEDICO since 1990, participating on annual trips. He has worked with numerous other charitable groups that provide dental services and establish clinics for people in remote parts of the world. He has also served as a mentor for at-risk teenage boys. Shel holds a BS in Biology and a DDS. He is a dentist and has owned his own dental practice in New York state since 1974.

Brigham Temple, MD, (Immediate Past President) has served on the board since 2004. He is a graduate of the Medical College of Pennsylvania and of Northwestern University's Emergency Medicine program. He is currently an emergency medicine physician at NorthShore University HealthSystem and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Chicago. He served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Santiago, Chile. He is active with several youth organizations for minorities, and has participated on other boards of volunteerism. 

Steven Esposito, DMD, began his involvement with MEDICO with his first brigade in 2008 and more recently in 2011. He is newly appointed to the Board and is interested in expanding the dental and educational services in Honduras. He has served as a volunteer in numerous local community organizations and Boards. Steve believes that in serving others a person can find true fulfillment. He is a 1982 graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and currently maintains a private dental practice in upstate New York. He is married to his college sweetheart and has two grown children.

Marian Flowers was one of MEDICO’s founders in 1990 and has served as leader on many MEDICO teams since. She is a member of the Board of Directors and serves on the scholarship committee. In her community, she has also been involved in Kiwanis, the Board of a county children’s shelter, and with community library programs.  She holds a BS and an MS in Speech/Language Pathology and Communication Disorders. She is a retired speech pathologist with 43 years of experience.  She was married to David Flowers for 43 years until his passing in 2009.  They have two grown children.

Craig McBurnett has been with MEDICO since its inception and first medical mission trip in 1990.  Over the years he has served multiple terms on the board - including serving as Board President.  He is an Executive Consultant and lives in Washington, DC.

Neil Martin, MD, has participated with MEDICO since 2006. A graduate of Cornell University, SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and the University of Maryland Hospitals, he has practiced Emergency Medicine in New Hampshire for nearly 30 years. His wife Debra, a Public Health nurse, has also been on trips since 2006, and they have 3 grown children.

Mike Moxness RN, WEMT, has been actively involved with MEDICO as a nurse and educator since 2011.  He has worked with other humanitarian aid organizations in Central America, Africa and the Middle East.  Mike is a registered nurse and EMT whose career was mostly in emergency medicine.  He is also an instructor for the Wilderness Medicine Institute, teaching courses for medics working in remote locations.  Prior to his medical career, Mike was an attorney and chief counsel for a NYSE-listed corporation in the wholesale/retail food industry.  Mike lives in Alaska with his wife, Diane, who he met while working as a trekking guide in Nepal. 

Norm Peters, co-founder of MEDICO and initial Board Chairman, has served on MEDICO’s Board and in a team leadership capacity since its inception in 1990. He has provided leadership in his community being involved as a founder of The Caring Place, a local service organization serving lower income families, as well as, founder and initial Board Chairman of the Georgetown Area Community Foundation. Along with a history of involvement in various vocal music affiliations, his local church community and service clubs, Norm spent twenty-five years officiating high school and college basketball games and has been an independent financial advisor since 1976.

Teri Reid, MD, joined the MEDICO board in May 2012.  She is a pediatrician and coordinates MEDICO's partnership with the Los Pipitos Program in Jalapa, Nicaragua.  Los Pipitos is a parent-run organization supporting families of children with special needs.  She has been involved with this program for 15 years.

Dee Sportsman, MPH, joined MEDICO as a volunteer in April of 2011 and joined the Board in January 2014.  She received her Master of Public Health from the University of Oklahoma, Health Sciences Center and is an experienced public health professional.  She retired from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission as a Senior Policy Advisor.  She has participated on numerous MEDICO teams and specializes in the assessment of community health needs and training for community health workers.  Dee is also a volunteer consultant with the Institute for Rural Health Studies in Hyderabad, India.
